As seen previously on my Instagram for Easter, as promised, I’m making my no-bake cake poppers for the 4th of July trip home to the fam. There’s no warmer welcome than when you have homemade treats in hand (so I’m beginning to learn).
1/2 cup of granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups white cake mix
3/4 cup butter (preferably unsalted)
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons milk (I used 2%)
3 tablespoons of sprinkles (more or less based on texture/delivery preference)
10 oz of white melting candy
Red and blue food dyes
Potential substitutions to try: Stevia, Raw or another sweetener instead of sugar – it’s on my to-do list, let me know how it is if you try it!
Step by Step
- Mix the butter and sugar together until combined.
- Add cake mix, flour, salt, and vanilla, mixing together thoroughly.
- Add desired amount of milk – I recommend 4 tablespoons.
- Add in desired amount sprinkles, mix well so they are dispersed.
- Roll batter into ball shapes (they will likely be lumpy because of their consistency, it’s okay!) about 1″ or so, however you prefer for your particular dish. Place them on a tray with parchment paper or another type of non-stick surface.
- Refrigerate for about 20 minutes so they firm a bit.
- Melt 5oz of melting candy in 2 melting cups when the poppers are almost ready to come out.

- Once your two cups of candies are melted, give them a stir.
Pro Tip: Even if they don’t look melted, try stirring. Chances are they are complete liquid just barely holding on to their original form, no need to keep microwaving.
- Add a few drops of food dye to each of the melted candy cups and stir, the create a tie-dye looking swirl.
- Dip in each of the cake poppers to coat in candy. You can either dip just one half or try to go for the whole popper, but the whole thing being coated is definitely harder. Either way is fine, my batch ended up being half and half!
- Once they have been dipped let them dry on a clean tray of parchment paper and refrigerate. I let mine sit overnight in the fridge and they always turn out just fine.
